Welcome to the Yawkey League

Welcome to the Yawkey Baseball League, home of the Boston area's premiere amateur baseball program.

The YBL is comprised of 15 teams from Boston and surrounding communities. We produce a "major league style" baseball program on an amateur level for young men high-school-age and over. Our teams consist of many former Varsity High School & College Players. We are proud to have many young men who have been involved in semi-pro & pro baseball as well. We espouse true sportsmanship and great competition on and off the field.

The YBL is the largest amateur baseball program for men in Boston. We play a 32-game schedule as it was meant to be played - with wood bats.

Our league has its roots in Boston back to the 1950's. We were also-known-as the: City League, the Twilight League and until 1990 the Boston Junior Park League.

1990 was a coming of age for our league. We were named in honor of Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Yawkey. Our affiliation with the Yawkey Family and the Boston Red Sox has brought us many benefits over the years. We are most proud of the privilege we enjoyed to play an All Star Game at Fenway Park for 12 years.

Message From the President

Good Evening:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Thomas A. Yawkey Baseball League, welcome to the IBEW Hall for the 2009 Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. We look back tonight on the amateur baseball careers of 8 men. Each has made his mark on the history of this organization. Every one of them has helped our League become one of New England's premiere amateur baseball leagues for young men.

The Yawkey League is a success because we play the game as it was developed. Our players work for a living and share their baseball talents between the white lines each night for no pay. They live for baseball during their Yawkey Years. The lads who don YBL uniforms are proud of the quality image they project on and off the field. They spend their spare time well during the summer – fulfilling their lifelong passion for the game of baseball.

Tonight we savor the seasons that were 2008 & 2009. The 32-game regular season brought forth quality talent from around the Metro Boston Area. Our playoffs were exciting. When all was said and done – West Roxbury Blue Fish won back-to-back YBL Championships. The hard work and determination of this great team will never be forgotten.

Congratulations and best wishes to all those who will be recognized this evening. I also want to thank every sponsor, player and coach for his dedication to the goals and standards set by our League. We are very fortunate to have you in this special sports organization.

Have fun tonight!

Sincerely,

David J. McKay - League President

WE REMEMBER!

COMMISSIONER DAN TARPEY

The Yawkey League and Greater Boston lost a gem of a man on March 1, 2008. Dan Tarpey was a leader in education and sports for 50 years. He was a true gentleman – sportsman. Mr. Tarpey was a strong and quiet leader, who helped to build the Thomas A. Yawkey League into its lofty spot in the amateur baseball world.

Big Dan made his mark on this league and his presence will always be felt.

He is pictured here with his best friend Al Thomas.

We continue to remember Dan by working hard to live up to our Code of Ethics and remain true to the ideal which he set as a standard during his many years as our leader.

COACH BILL CUNNINGHAM

MCKAY CLUB BEACONS

Billy Cunningham was the Bench Coach of the McKay Club Beacons. He suffered a massive stroke in July 2008 while coaching a game at Ronan Park. Bill passed away on November 8, 2008. Billy was a strong & quiet force on the McKay Club and was a symbol of class and hard work. He was always prepared to help lead his team. Bill was a student of the game on all levels. His contributions to the Yawkey League & McKay Club will be remembered forever in our organization.

COACH STEVE GEORGE

SOUTH BOSTON SAINTS

Steve George is pictured here with his sons Steve, David, Doug and Kevin.

Although Mr. George raised an immediate family – he was a surrogate Dad and Mentor to hundreds of young men and women in the Columbia-Savin Hill District of Dorchester. Steve passed away in 2008. We miss his charm, wit, dedication and love for baseball and the kids who played in our league!

Steve was inducted into the Yawkey League Hall of Fame along with his sons Kevin and Doug.

Dennis Bistany

On August 18, 2009 the Malden Bulldogs and the Yawkey League lost a true friend in baseball with the sudden loss of Coach Dennis Bistany.

In life Coach Bistany was a teacher in so many aspects of life. He was an adored school teacher from Methuen, a beloved coach to many in the Greater Boston baseball community and a selfless man who always thought of others before himself. Dennis was always considered a hero and a mentor to the many kids he taught and coached. In passing, Dennis once again acted in a selfless manner and thought of others before himself when he jumped into the waters of Newfound Lake in New Hampshire to aid his brother in law who was in trouble.

Dennis sacrificed his own life to save another human being. Those that knew Dennis Bistany were not shocked hearing that kind of a selfless act. Upon that ultimate sacrifice, Dennis Bistany earned the right to sit on the right side of God. We will forever miss him here on Earth but his memory will live on through the memories of all of us who have been touched by his kind, caring, selfless and caring soul. We are forever better human beings for knowing him.

THE PLAYERS, COACHES AND ADMINISTRATORS

ALSO WISH TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF

TOM AND JEAN YAWKEY

Mr. & Mrs. Yawkey’s - baseball legacy - continues in the heart and soul of this organization. The Foundation established in Tom Yawkey’s name - has provided us with a financial grant to help provide the young men of greater Boston with an opportunity to play baseball as it was meant to be played.

We are forever grateful to those who continue the Yawkey tradition of “service to the community” in Boston and beyond.

We salute the Board and administrators of the Yawkey Foundations in Boston.

KEVIN WHITE - SOMERVILLE

kev hi5

white

Kevin White was the heart and soul of the Somerville Alibrandi’s team for 18 seasons.  He was the team’s first captain and was named to 5 all star teams during his career.  Kevin holds a unique distinction of being the only player in league history to be named Most Valuable of the Regular Season (2002), the Playoffs (2003) and the All Star Game at Fenway Park (1996).  Among his peers, he was voted a winner of 7 consecutive Gold Gloves (2001-2007) for his tremendous defense and won the 2003 Silver Slugger Awards as the best offensive second baseman in the league.  These awards are tributes to his hard work and effort that place him in the conversation of being the best second baseman in the leagues history.

Known as a tough hard-nosed player, Kevin is the all time YBL leader in hit by pitches as he never gave an inch and would do whatever it took to help his team win. Kevin’s never-give-up attitude was stamped in the team’s history with a title-saving home run versus the Al Thomas Club in 2005 with 2 outs in the 7th.  That home run prevented Somerville from going down 3 games to none, and propelled them to win the series in seven games.  His hustle, leadership and passion for the game drove the Somerville team to be competitive each and every night, leading the Somerville Alibrandis Baseball Team to an extraordinary 10 Yawkey Baseball League Championships during his career.

For all his accomplishments, the Somerville Alibrandi Baseball Team is proud to induct Kevin White into the Yawkey Baseball League Hall of Fame.

SHAWN HERLIHY – MCKAY CLUB BEACONS

Shawn Herlihy was the catalyst for success that catapulted the McKay Club to the Yawkey League Championship Finals in 1998 and 2000. When you mention "Hurls" - you talk about Speed! Shawn is without a doubt one of the fastest men to don a uniform in Yawkey League history. That speed enabled him to track down and snag hundreds of lofty fly balls. He saved many games during his years with his fleet feet and cats-eye glove work. Almost every walk or a single was a two base advancement. He legged triples from doubles on a regular basis and had the power and bat speed to match.

Hurls led the McKay Club and the Yawkey League in many offensive categories over his 7 year career before he moved to Columbus, Ohio to pursue a career advancement in 2002. Shawn returned in 2004 for a 10 day visit and played for his old Club during his stay. Here is a look at what he accomplished in just 10 days:

24AB; 11R; 10H; 3 3B;  1HR; 5RBI; .563 OBP; .793SLG; .417AVG.;  4SB. Those 10 games helped the McKay Club to a 19 win 13 loss -- second place finish -- in the Tarpey Conference and a spot in the YBL Play Offs.

Shawn Herlihy always has fun playing baseball - Very Well. He is a classic old school baseball player in modern times. Shawn had an injured knee and once went on the field with the brace on the wrong leg - stating, "oops I forgot which knee was hurting". He would get so entangled in his at bats that often-times he would run to center field with his batting helmet still on -- his team mates would never let him know until he felt it on his noggin.

Shawn continues to tear up the playing surfaces in Columbus, Ohio. But, we will never see the likes of this gentleman - player who gave 110% every game and helped make the Yawkey League what it is today.

For his contributions to the team and the Yawkey Baseball League, the McKay Club is proud to induct Shawn Herlihy into the Hall of Fame.

GREG LOVELY

AL THOMAS ATHLETICS

Greg Lovely played shortstop for the Al Thomas Club for 8 years, earning all star honors six times and winning 3 gold gloves. He was a member of 5 division-winning teams and hit over .400 four times. His steady glove and reliable bat helped the A's to stay in contention year after year. In 2002 and 2003, he played professional baseball in Australia, playing short and pitching, hitting over .400 both years and winning the Mr. Consistency Award. He returned to the A's in 2004 and picked up where he had left off, hitting .471 that year. He played two more all star seasons before retiring to pursue business school.

A two-year baseball captain at Bowdoin College, he also served as captain for golf and basketball. For his talents and abilities on the field, and his leadership and sportsmanship off the field, the Al Thomas Club is proud to induct Greg Lovely into the Yawkey Baseball League Hall of Fame.

RICH HILL

AL THOMAS ATHLETICS

Rich Hill began his career in the Yawkey League as a batboy for the Al Thomas Club from 1990-1993, serving the team on which his brothers Lloyd and Larry played and earned Hall of Fame status. He played varsity baseball for Milton High School as a freshman and later earned Bay State League MVP honors. He pitched 3 years at the University of Michigan where he finished 4th in career strikeouts and 3rd in single season K's.

Rich played parts of 4 years with the Al Thomas Club with his best performance in June 1998 at Rogers Park when he started in right field and homered in the first inning, then came on in relief and retired 18 consecutive batters, 15 via the strikeout.

He was a Cape Cod League All Star for Chatham, and played in the Area Code games. Drafted in the 4th round by the Chicago Cubs in 2002, he was named the 2006 AAA All Star Game MVP for the Pacific Coast League and won 6 games for the Cubs that year. He followed that up with 11 wins in 2007, finishing 5th in the National League with 183 K's. He has 5 double-digit strikeout games in the majors, and hopes to overcome two years of injuries to continue a promising career in the major leagues in 2010.

His determination, perseverance, and commitment to fulfilling his lifelong dream serve as model behavior for young athletes and aspiring future major leaguers. For his outstanding talents and achievements in baseball, and for serving as a role model for past, present and future Yawkey League baseball players, the Al Thomas Club is proud to induct Rich Hill into the Yawkey Baseball League Hall of Fame.

BILL GILLS

BRIGHTON SOX

Billy Gills played outfield and pitched for the Brighton Black Sox for ten seasons (1998-2007).  Although his first year marked the first in several that they did not made the playoffs, Billy would become part of the core that would return the Sox to the playoffs for the next 8 seasons, including a trip to the finals in 2001.  During his time with the Black Sox, Billy would appear in four All-Star games.

While a gold-glove-caliber centerfielder, he would make his biggest impact for the Sox on the mound.  From 2004-2007, he posted an ERA of 1.98, striking out 165 while walking only 32 over 176.2 IP.

Twice he finished the season with fewer than 10 earned runs, while averaging 7 starts a year.

In 2006, Billy would pitch a no-hitter against the Chelsea Royals, walking one and striking out six. In his next start against West Roxbury, he nearly threw a second no-hitter, only to lose that bid with one out in the seventh.

For all of his accomplishments and years of leadership, the Brighton Sox are proud to induct Billy Gills into the Yawkey League Hall of Fame.

MATT BORTO

BRIGHTON SOX

Matt Borto played for the Brighton Black Sox for seven seasons, from 2001-2007.

While Matt would spend some time at first, catching and DH, his main role for the Sox would prove to be on the mound.   Matt's work on the mound helped guide the Sox into the playoffs his first six seasons, including a trip to the finals in 2001.

Matt played in the 2002 All-Star game at Fenway Park.  Having pitched the night before, Matt was unable to pitch in the game, although he was able to collect a single in his one at bat.

From 2004-2007, he posted an ERA of 1.53, striking out 186 in 183 IP while only walking 50.

In 2006, he only gave up 3 earned runs over 40.2 innings pitched to post a 0.52 ERA. In 2005, Matt threw a perfect game against the Brookline Dodgers, striking out 16 in the masterpiece.

For his accomplishments and years of leadership, The Brighton Sox are proud to induct Matt Borto into the Yawkey League Hall of Fame.

JIM DRURY

SAVIN HILL HORNETS

Jim Drury started coaching in little league at Savin Hill's McConnell Park in 1978 and continued until he retired from the YBL at the close of the 2008 season.

In those 30 years, he coached teams in little league, all star little league, teen teams, City League, Twi-Light, Jr. Park League and Yawkey League, all from Savin Hill, Dorchester. Jim was also a founder, Board Member & President of the Savin Hill Baseball League and a founder and Chairman of the All Dorchester Sports League (ADSL).

He has coached for literally hundreds of youths and young men and the organizations he helped start have served thousands of kids and young adults.

Jim also has held a board position as League Treasurer for the YBL for close to 15 years. His service on the Board of Directors was instrumental in helping to shape the YBL into one of the best and most competitive amateur baseball organizations in the Greater Boston area.

Jim is very proud to have been a part of the successes, growth and tremendous popularity of the Yawkey Baseball League as it is today. He is very proud and humble to join his many Savin Hill ball players,
the prestigious, talented and dedicated league builders and also his very dear friend, Dan Tarpey, in the YBL Hall Of Fame.

For his tireless efforts for so many years, and his dedication to baseball in Savin Hill and the Yawkey League, the Savin Hill Hornets are proud to induct Jim Drury into the Yawkey League Hall of Fame.

JOEL VALASQUEZ

BOSTON PADRES

Joel Valasquez was a six-time All Star. He was a thinking man’s pitcher. He could beat you with his fastball as well as his brains. He was a hard-throwing righty who kept the ball low. He had pinpoint control and would live on the corners.

He was a groundball pitcher but delivered the big strike out when he needed it. As Joel got older, he relied on his experience and brains to be even more effective. He would throw his pitches slightly off the plate outside to get batters to chase and then he would bust them inside.

Joel was a playoff participant 11 times in his 15-year career. The highlight of his career was winning the Championship in 1994 while a member of the Boston Padres.

Teammates remember Joe as the ultimate team player. He would always take the ball when asked and gave everything he had in him for the team.

For his superior accomplishments on the field, and his commitment to the game of baseball, the Roxbury Mets are proud to induct Joel Valasquez into the Yawkey League Hall of Fame.

  THOMAS A. YAWKEY BASEBALL LEAGUE

                        CODE OF ETHICS

The YBL Code of Ethics has been developed in order to help create an atmosphere of good will and sportsmanship on and off the field in our organization. The YBL has been constructed out of a love and respect for the game of Baseball. We are all sportsman in this league, who appreciate hard work and dedication to the ideals established to enhance fair play and quality amateur baseball.

                                INTEGRITY

As a member of the YBL, I understand that the organization needs my loyalty. It is my goal to support this league with the highest integrity. I will make every effort to support my team -- in doing so I will protect the INTEGRITY of the YBL & the GAME.

RESPECT

As a member of the YBL, I understand that I am part of a fellowship of teams that are organized to promote quality amateur baseball in the Greater Boston Area. As a member of the YBL, I understand that I must be respectful to the GAME, the league & my team. My objective is to be a winner. I will be a winner on the field by presenting myself like a gentleman.

SPORTSMANSHIP

As a member of the Thomas A. Yawkey Baseball League, I will strive to be a GOOD SPORT! It all begins with me. My actions on and off the field must reflect the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play.

CIVILITY: I will be gracious in victory as well as in defeat.

FAIRNESS: I will observe the spirit and letter of the rules established by the YBL.

RESPONSIBILITY: I will take charge of my words and actions.

RESPECT: I will acknowledge good efforts by opponents and teammates.

COURAGE: I will have the HEART to do the right thing!
